  How to Register PDUs with PMI for PMP Re-certification?

As per PMI's Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR), every certified Project Management Professional (PMP) needs to earn 60 Professional Development Units (PDUs) in each certification cycle (3 years), in order to renew his/her PMP Certification.

Many new PMPs do not know how to register PDUs with PMI. In this article, I'm going to provide step-by-step instructions on registering PDUs with PMI. But before I continue, let me bust a common myth around PDU registration. Many certified PMPs think that they need to be active PMI members in order to register PDUs with PMI. This is simply not true. All certified PMPs can access PMI's certification section, irrespective of their PMI membership status. So let's begin with the steps involved in registering PDUs with PMI.

STEP 1: Go to CCRS Home Page

There are 4 main fields to be filled up here:
  • PMI ID Number

    • For active PMI members, this number is the same as the PMI membership number printed on your PMI membership card.
    • For people whose membership has expired, this number is the same as their original (expired) PMI membership number.
    • For people who have never been PMI members, the instructions to request the PMI ID number are given right below the form (see the red mark-ups on the figure above).

  • PMP Cert Number

    • This is your PMP Certificate Number, printed right on your PMP Certificate.

  • Password

    • The first four characters of your last name is your password.

  • Selection field - PMI Transcript / PMI PDU Self Report Form

    • If you are logging in for the first time (which is what I'm presuming), you want to select PMI PDU Self Report Form

STEP 2: Select the PDU Category.

Refer to PMP Handbook for more information on PDU Categories. There are many PDU Categories and it's not possible for me to cover each one here. So, I'm going to take Category 3, which is one of the most common categories for earning PDUs, as an example and walk you through the steps involved.

Select Category 3 from the list and click "Continue" button.

STEP 3: Now we come to the actual claim form for Category 3. Here you have 3 options:

  • Option 1: Report PDUs by providing the exact PMI Registered Education Provider (REP) ID and the Course Number

  • Option 2: Report PDUs by searching by Provider Name. If you use this option, system will show you all the provider names that match your search string. After you select the provider name from the list, system will show you the list of courses from that provider. Note that many providers prevent their courses from being listed in this manner (possibly to prevent fraud). If your course is not listed, you'll have to choose option 1 (provide exact Provider ID and Course ID).

  • Option 3: Here you can search providers by Provider ID. After you find the provider, the following steps are same as for Option 2.

  • Note: With all the 3 options, in order for you to report your PDUs, your provider must have registered the course with PMI. From my experience, many providers do not register their courses in a timely manner. In some instances, I had to wait for upto 2 weeks before I could see the course online and register PDUs. If your course isn't registered with PMI even until 2 weeks after the course completion date, you should contact your course provider for help.

STEP 4: After you select/enter the right Provider ID and Course ID, you'll get to the actual PDU Reporting form.

On this form, ensure that your PDU Category, Program number ({Provider ID}-{Course ID}; example 0987-1234ABC) and Course or Event title are accurate. Fill in the other details accurately and click "Preview". On the Preview page, you can verify all the details and "Submit" the application form.

Note: Once you submit the form you cannot change the details. So, it's your responsibility to ensure that all the details are accurate. If you are unsure of some details, do not submit until you get your doubts clarified.

After you report your PDUs, it will take about 3-5 business days before you can see them in your Online PDU transcript (link available on the left hand side navigation bar of the application page).

That's all there is to registering your PDUs with PMI. I hope it makes life easier for some PMPs.
